Banner

A graphic which serves as an advertisement and is usually embedded in an HTML document. Banners come in various shapes and sizes, are clickable and link to the advertiser's website.

Bandwidth

In Internet terms, bandwidth defines the amount of data that can be sent over a network in a given time period. The larger the bandwidth, the greater the amount of data that can be transferred through the connection.

Bit depth

The number of bits which hold the colour information needed to display one pixel of an image. When compressing graphics for use on the web, lowering the image's bit depth can result in much smaller files.

Bitmap

A bitmap is an image in which a single layer of pixels is geometrically mapped on a rectangular grid. Bitmaps are characterized by high detail and limited scalability, as opposed to vector image formats, which scale well. JPEG, PNG and GIF are examples of bitmap image formats.

Broadband

A widely-used term describing any high-speed Internet connection. Includes broadband technologies such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), cable modems, satellite, T1 and T3 fiber connections that offer transmission speeds of up to several megabits per second.

Browser

A graphical interface that enables users to "navigate" the Internet, i.e. look at content offered on the Internet. The most popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, although alternative programs such as Opera are gaining popularity.
