Hexadecimal

A number system often used in web page design to define RGB colours. It is a base-16 system and contains the following symbols: 0 to 9, followed by the letters A to F. Thus, the decimal number 10 equals the hexadecimal number A. An HTML colour is defined by the syntax <... color=“#RRGGBB“> with RR representing the amount of red, GG the amount of green and BB the amount of blue making up the desired RGB colour.

Hits

Hits are the individual requests answered by a server when a browser window loads a web page. Each single element on the HTML page, such as images, text, and embedded media files and the HTML page itself, is counted as a separate hit. Page views are a much better indicator for website traffic, as they count only the total wepage displayed in a browser window as one entity.

HTML

Hypertext Markup Language. Coding language used to describe the structure of web pages, and the text, images and interactive elements contained in them. HTML pages are composed of tags that specify the layout of tables and frames and define the appearance of fonts, graphics and embedded media. They also contain hypertext links to other HTML documents. HTML pages use an .html or .htm extension. See also: Hypertext

HTTP

Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The protocol that enables communication between HTTP client programs (browsers) and HTTP server programs. Written by Tim Berners-Lee and first implemented in 1991. HTTP is the main protocol used on the World Wide Web. See also: WWW

Hypertext/Hypermedia

Hypertext is text in a web page which includes links to other web pages or a different location in the current webpage. Once the reader has clicked a hypertext link, the new location specified in that link is displayed. Hypertext links are usually highlighted on a web page by being underlined or set in a different colour than the rest of the text.
Hypermedia is the term used to describe media links, for example audio, video and graphics which can also take the reader to a different page.
