Scripting language

A programming language used to write scripts (executable series of commands). Instead of being compiled as a whole before being run, the scripts are interpreted line by line. Commonly used scripting languages include Perl and JavaScript, among others. See also: Javascript, Perl

Server

A computer or software program that routes data to other computers connected to the same network. Web servers are programs which are responsible for establishing a connection to the Internet. Other types of servers, such as printer servers, control the resources available on a network. See also: Internet

SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. SMTP is a protocol used for sending email over the Internet. After the email is sent via SMTP, a mail handler processes it on the recipient's behalf. Whether the mail remains on the server after the user has checked their mail is determined by the user's POP or IMAP settings. See also: IMAP, POP

SSI

Server-Side Includes. SSI commands tell a server which information to include in a web page before forwarding it to the browser. They are formatted as SGML comments within the HTML document, which guarantees that the code will only be rendered by clients that support SSI.

Streaming

Technology which enables a user to view or listen to a multimedia file while it is being downloaded from the Internet. In order to view the media, the user must have installed a streaming media player, which decompress audio and video data. Popular players are developed by Windows Media, QuickTime and RealNetworks. Streaming technology is also used in live radio or live video broadcasts.

Stylesheet

A stylesheet, also called Cascading Stylesheet (CSS), is a textfile that controls various web page elements, such as font faces, background colours and cell margins. The appearance of a web page can quickly be edited by using external stylesheets. When an external stylesheet is linked to a webpage, changes to the stylesheet are automatically incorporated into the webpage. This is especially useful for automating style changes which must be made to an entire website. See also: CSS
